How are you going to change your family tree?

How are you going to change your family tree?

I just recorded a podcast episode that was so damn personal, straight up and real that it nearly took my breath away. Truly. And this isn’t to suggest that my usual podcast episodes are not real. Of course they are – they are all topics I feel called to discuss or topics that you have asked me to cover, but the one I recorded today involved no planning or lists or even deliberate messages to share. No notes beforehand. I just talked. And talked. And 19 minutes (and an editing process) later… I ended up with a podcast that I think can make a huge difference to anyone who connects with it. You can access this podcast here.

The topic? How are you going to change your family tree?

I think this requires some explanation because of course, the structure of our family trees just that. Structured, firm (until more people are born). What I am referring to however is TRAITS… BELIEFS… ACTIONS. What traits can you change / adapt / employ which will positively change your life and also your family tree… your kids and the generations beyond.

This topic was motivated by a podcast that I’ve recently found myself obsessed with. The Dave Ramsey Show is a personal finance show which I access via podcast (and YouTube) which is likely to be a key factor in me achieving some of the personal finance goals I have now set for myself… so spoiler alert – I refer to finance goals in the podcast… and actually disclose quite a bit about my world in this respect.

I do it however because I want it to be a trigger for YOU.

How are you going to change your family tree?

  • Will you focus on your finances (too)? (Which can enable you to pay for your child/ren’s education? Get out of debt? Set up opportunities for others? Give you more choices when it comes to what you do on a daily basis? Allow you to do more of what you love?)
  • Will you build your confidence so you demonstrate how being self-assured can help you win and make solid decisions. Help you feel sufficient to be on your own? Work hard? Ignore naysayers?
  • Will you travel the world and open your eyes and those of your child/ren?
  • Will you start a green juice habit so healthy choices become second nature for you and your lil ones?
  • Will you take the steps needed to get into a job you love / change careers / start a business – highlighting that it really is possible to make a living doing something you love?
  • Will you read more books to expand your enjoyment and / or knowledge and demonstrate the importance of turning off the TV / social media etc and reading, even when there are lots of other choices?
  • Will you make sure you are in a relationship where you are kind and loving to each other, in a way that feels great to you both but also models this to your child/ren?
  • Will you choose to be kind about people so your kid/s see you can opt out of gossip and being mean to people?
  • Will you enter a traditionally male industry which shows girls in your family that it may be scary to be a pioneer but it’s okay, doable and worth it?

There are loads of AMAZING things I got from my parents. Most of the time they modelled love, respect, adventure (including a love of travel), a “can do” attitude, confidence, their way of raising a family and still being themselves, gratitude and so much more.

In my life, I hope to demonstrate these traits above that I have seen throughout my life – and now – through being self reflective and recognising my own shortcomings, make some active choices of what I (and indeed we, alongside hubby) can model to our daughter.

This is what I mean when I talk about changing your family tree.

What are you already doing / modelling? And what will you do? Check out the podcast here (or if you have iTunes, pop over there and subscribe so they automatically come to you) :)

Excited for you. Keep doing amazing things in your world and if this topic is as inspirational for you as it is for me, I hope you feel inspired to keep going with what you’re working on.
